2014 Honda Odyssey – A minivan the whole family can enjoy
July 03 2014, Justin Barker
Honda states that the 2014 Odyssey is the “first and only” minivan to earn the 2014 TOP SAFETY PICK+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. If this statement has not already intrigued parents looking for a new family vehicle, then its versatile interior and quiet cabin, along with its fuel-efficient V6 engine should spike your interest.
First off, parents or consumers in general that are looking for a minivan should note that a 3.5-litre V6 engine powers the 2014 Honda Odyssey. Its engine will generate 248 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque to move the vehicle forward. The engine is also mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.
The 2014 Odyssey offers engaging driving dynamics that make for an interesting family car, rather than one that is slow or boring. Agile handling is another aspect to enjoy from Honda’s vehicle, along with good acceleration.
The minivan’s V6 engine is fuel-efficient as well, and has a fuel economy rating of 10.9 litres per 100 kilometres when in the city, and 7.1 L/100km when on the highway. The average consumption rating is 9.2 L/100km.
Regarding safety features, parents will be pleased to note that all models come equipped with vehicle stability and traction control, a 4-wheel Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and brake assist, among many others. A blind spot information system is available, depending on the model, in addition to forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and Honda’s LaneWatch blind spot display.
Inside the vehicle, both parents and children can appreciate a list of features, both standard and/or optional on certain trims. For example, tri-zone climate control with humidity control and an air filtration system may come in handy, and the automaker’s HondaVAC – an in-car vacuum system - will prove helpful when cleaning up crumbs found on the floor or on the seats.
Parents may also want to opt for Honda’s rear DVD entertainment system to keep their passengers busy, while mom and dad can enjoy music from SiriusXM satellite radio. Bluetooth with audio streaming capability and hands-free calling, in addition to steering wheel-mounted audio controls along with cruise control are standard or available as well.
As for the comfort aspect of the 2014 Honda Odyssey, the base LX trim comes with an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat, and heated front seats are offered on the EX trim and up.
Honda’s minivan provides seating for eight people, and thanks for its third-row Magic Seat, consumers can fold the seats in one simple motion with a 60/40 split. The second-row is also adjustable, another aspect that parents will find useful.
The 2014 Honda Odyssey has a starting price of $29,990 (Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price), and considering the versatile interior, seating capacity, the engaging driving dynamics and the long list of available features, Honda’s minivan was and still is an instant hit.
